For almost 20 years extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been an acknowledged form of treatment in orthopaedics where it is applied successfully for the non-invasive treatment of indications such as calcific tendinitis, achillodynia, epicondylitis and trigger points. Originally, shock wave therapy comes from urology where it is used for the disintegration of kidney stones (extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, SWL).
In our practice, we use the latest equipment and best technologies in shockwave! This state of art Swiss made equipment, has been developed after many years research into providing improved shockwave treatment. The STORZ DUOLITH® SD1 provides ultra-focused shock wave therapy that is superior to radial shockwave used by many other practitioners (see below).
For patients this means they enjoy:
- Short treatment sessions
- Treatment without anaesthetics
- Gentle treatment
- Excellent healing rate
- Restored mobility and quality of life
- Affordable therapy
After just two or three sessions, over 80% of patients report to be pain-free or to feel a significant pain reduction.
(There is a fourth technology – radial shockwave (RSWT) or more accurate described as pressure wave therapy.
This differs from true shockwave technology because it does not focus pressure waves to create a shockwave. A review of the waveforms reveals that true focused shockwaves are very short and intense while radial pressure waves are slower, less intense, elongated and more sinusoidal in appearance. Because no actual shockwave is produced with RSWT, and because the waveform is so different, RSWT is not considered a shockwave technology. It is more accurately described as a pressure wave technology, and most researchers now use this term to distinguish it from shockwave technology.)
