Hip Pain – Trochanteric Bursitis (GTPS) is inflammation and swelling of the bursa located between the point of the hip (trochanter) and the overlying gluteal muscles. The body contains small, fluid-filled sacs which are known medically as bursae, together they serve a very important function by providing a cushioning effect that eases friction between bones, muscles, tendons, and skin. Bursitis problems occurs when these sacs get irritated or inflamed.
These fluid-filled sacs are located around major joints like shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees and can hinder movement when inflamed. If you are diagnosed with trochanteric bursitis this will be caused by trigger points in the gluteal muscles and the external hip rotators.
Symptoms of Trochanteric Bursitis
- Pain over the outside of the hip
- Pain down the outside of the thigh as far down as the knee
- Pain aggravated by hip movements such as walking, running, stair climbing, leg crossing and getting in and out of the car
- The area may be tender to touch and warm
Depending on the severity of the injury, these can include:
- Draining the bursa
- Taking anti-inflammatory medication
- Anti-inflammatory injections directly into the bursa to stimulate healing
Shockwave Treatment for Trochanteric Bursitis
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is frequently used to treat bursitis in progressive clinics around the world where consultants have discovered the positive effects it has had on hip pain.
According to a study published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine, patients receiving shock wave therapy for trochanteric bursitis had both short-term improvement in their condition that continued 12 months after treatment and concluded that shock wave therapy is an effective treatment for greater trochanteric pain syndrome.
In a more recent study published by the The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery in August 2020 the authors concluded:
“F-ESWT in association with a specific exercise program is safe and effective for GTPS, with a success rate of 86.8% at 2 months after treatment, which was maintained until the end of follow-up.”
