Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy (EMTT®) is a non-invasive treatment that has been specially developed for treating musculoskeletal (MSK) pain and other disorders. We either use it alone or in conjunction with our Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) equipment. In fact, EMTT combined with Shockwave Therapy is a ‘game changer’ for people struggling with chronic conditions.

Disorders of the musculoskeletal system are the most common cause of (chronic) pain and include back pain and osteoarthritis as well as typical sports injuries such as inflammation of the tendons and joints.

People who suffer from these conditions often experience significant limitations in their everyday life as well as reduced quality of life. MSK conditions account for 30% of GP consultations in England.

We use the Magnetolith EMTT, it is the only CE approved electromagnetic therapy for the treatment of MSK diseases of the muscle, bone, joints, nerves, tendons, and tissues. We have also found that it is particularly effective in reducing pain in degenerative joint diseases such as knee and hip arthritis and degenerative spinal pain. It can also help you recover faster from a number of operative procedures. It is a welcome alternative to steroid injections and surgery. The Magnetolith EMTT is capable of generating a wide range of frequencies at varying levels of power, allowing for precise adjustments suitable for your treatment.

Treatment is usually fast and comfortable and depending on the treatment being undertaken and lasts around twenty to thirty minutes. The loop of the applicator is placed directly above or around the part of the body being treated, direct skin contact is not necessary. Treatment is usually repeated up to eight times over a number of weeks.

What Happens During EMTT Treatment?

Our Magnetolith machine uses EMTT to target painful areas of the body generating high energy magnetic waves at extremely high oscillating frequencies ranging from 100–300 kHz. These waves penetrate deep tissues up to 18cm beneath the skin’s surface enabling them to reach difficult-to-reach tendons, muscles, bones, and nervous tissues. This deep tissue treatment is unique to this therapy and triggers electromagnetically induced biological effects at the cell and tissue level. It accelerates swelling elimination, helps restore normal blood flow, nutrients, and oxygenation of tissue.

The magnetic waves also stimulate specific biological processes in the tissues that are being targeted, increasing their activity, speeding up and enhancing the healing process in injuries and chronic disorders and reducing inflammation. Fibroblast and collagen proliferation is increased following each treatment leading to wound healing.

Researchers have shown its effectiveness in speeding up healing of tendons, nerves, bone, and lower back problems. EMTT can be applied to any bone injury or tendon problems. As mentioned earlier, treatment can be further enhanced when combined with shockwave therapy ESWT.

This technology was CE approved in March 2020 and we are one of a handful of UK Clinics able to offer this treatment.

The CE approval mark means that the manufacturer takes responsibility for the compliance of a product with all applicable European health, safety, performance, and environmental requirements. CE stands for “Conformité Européenne".

The treatment is very safe and painless, there are no reported side effects to this treatment and there are only a few instances where the treatment will be unsuitable for you. It can be integrated with other rehabilitation therapies for the treatment of chronic and acute pain in musculoskeletal diseases and injuries.

 

The therapy is usually delivered in a course of treatments over a number of weeks. The number of sessions required will be discussed with you at the outset of the treatment, though this can change depending on how well you respond to the overall therapy.

Initially, electromagnetic fields were used by the Soviet Union to treat cosmonauts who had spent extended periods in space and suffered from a loss of bone density and muscle due to the lack of gravity and exercise.

They returned to Earth with weakened bones and muscles and to treat this, medical specialists used Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) therapy to supplement pharmaceutical methods to regenerate bone density and combate bone loss. The success of this treatment led to the spread of PEMF therapy throughout the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.

NASA later conducted its own research into the use of PEMF to stop bone loss, muscle atrophy and fatigue for Astronauts during and after Space Travel, eventually filing its own patent for the use of PEMF in tissue regeneration in 2009.

There is a huge body of medical literature supporting its use. NICE NHS research have documented its benefits and over 2,000 medical research studies have been published over the years in support of the effectiveness in tissue repair.

In the USA the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have cleared It’s use by medical professionals to treat conditions as diverse as depression, non-union fractures, soft tissue pain and regeneration. It is also being used in plastic surgery for treating post-operative pain and swelling, and for graft survival.

EMTT treatment uses those same electromagnetic fields to positively influence tissue to promote healing. But many of the PEMF machines do not have enough power to induce a power beyond the minimum threshold of 10μT and therefore they will not create any biological effects. EMTT works at a range of >100kHz.

The Magnetolith EMTT machine we use is able to achieve 18 oscillations before PEMF has achieved even half of one oscillation and thee absolute field strength of EMTT is approximately 40% stronger than PEMF.

Note this treatment is not suitable for patients with pacemakers or during pregnancy.
